Mel brings over a decade of experience across public service, communications, media, and community development to the governance table of Te Puna Ariki Charitable Trust. With a strong background in digital engagement, stakeholder relationships, and community-facing systems, she has worked extensively within central government supporting whānau, hapū, iwi, and organisations to navigate and access funding, services, and opportunities.
Her professional journey includes leadership in national digital engagement strategies, public information campaigns, and multi-channel communications through her role with the Department of Internal Affairs. Mel is recognised for her ability to translate complex systems into clear, accessible pathways, ensuring engagement is inclusive, transparent, and grounded in the realities of the communities it serves.
Mel’s experience is complemented by a strong foundation in social science, with education in psychology and human development, alongside formal youth development training. She has actively supported rangatahi through her volunteer work with One Chance Youth Charitable Trust, contributing to digital marketing and promotions that uplift youth voice and participation.
Her commitment to community development is long-standing and hands-on. Mel has held leadership roles as Community Educator and Coordinator for Keep Rotorua Beautiful, and has been actively involved in Rotary and Rotaract, including serving in leadership positions. Through these roles, she has contributed to initiatives that strengthen community connection, environmental responsibility, and local capability building.
Alongside her public sector work, Mel has an extensive background in media and creative industries. As Creative Director of M J Groves Media, she has delivered multimedia storytelling, photography, videography, and event-based content, working closely with clients to bring community narratives to life. Her experience also includes roles as a City News Field Presenter with TV Rotorua and marketing and promotions leadership for initiatives such as the revival of the Miss Rotorua pageant and the Rotorua Hospitality Awards.
Grounded in both lived experience and professional practice, Mel brings a practical, solutions-focused lens to governance. Her mahi centres on strengthening connections between people and systems, advocating for equitable access, and ensuring community voice is not only heard but meaningfully reflected in decision-making.
As a parent, Mel’s commitment to the kaupapa of Te Puna Ariki is deeply personal. Her leadership is guided by whanaungatanga, manaakitanga, and accountability, with a clear focus on creating environments where tamariki, rangatahi, and whānau can thrive.
