Rangatahi Leadership Council

About:

The Rangatahi Leadership Council is a dedicated group focused on empowering and supporting the next generation of Māori leaders. The committee looks to bring together rangatahi from all walks of life to guide the vision, mission and work of Te Puna Ariki.

At present, there are 7 positions on the council. 3 for tauira in Kura Auraki (Mainstream Schools), 1 for tauira that are Homeschooled, and 3 for tauira that attend either a Kura Kaupapa or Kura-a-Iwi. The members of the council are appointed by the board on the advice of the trusts General Manager. The council will also elect from amongst themselves, a chairperson to lead the council.

What does the council do?

The council has 3 (three) core functions:

Provide guidance and advice on the trusts strategy, ensuring that the perspectives and aspirations of rangatahi are central to the trust's strategic goals.

Advocate and amplifying the voices of young people, the committee designs and supports programmes and opportunities that foster leadership, cultural resilience, and rangatahi development.

Distribute funds on behalf of the trust board, the committee will financially support kaupapa that are by rangatahi and for rangatahi. This ensures that our rangatahi hold the pen and maintain mana motuhake over the areas of development that they are passionate about.

What do the committee members receive?

The committee members are provided specialist mentoring and development opportunities from the trusts General Manager. Each of the committee members will be upskilled in the areas of governance, financial literacy, and public speaking. The committee members are also invited to attend any/all of the trusts development initiatives. The trust will also run specialist leadership wānanga for the members of the committee.
