Rangatahi Leadership Council

About:

The Rangatahi Leadership Council is a dedicated group focused on empowering and supporting the next generation of Māori leaders. The committee looks to bring together rangatahi from all walks of life to guide the vision, mission and work of Te Puna Ariki.

At present, there are 7 positions on the council. 3 for tauira in Kura Auraki (Mainstream Schools), 1 for tauira that are Homeschooled, and 3 for tauira that attend either a Kura Kaupapa or Kura-a-Iwi. The members of the council are appointed by the board on the advice of the trusts Chief Executive. The council will also elect from amongst themselves, a chairperson to lead the council and represent their interests in the Te Puna Ariki Board of Trustees.

What does the council do?

The council has 3 (three) core functions

Lead the trusts strategy and ensure it aligns with mokopuna-decisions, ensuring that the perspectives and aspirations of rangatahi are central to the trust's strategic goals.

Advocate and amplify the voices of young people, the council designs and supports programmes and opportunities that foster leadership, cultural resilience, and rangatahi development.

Distribute funds on behalf of the trust board, the council will financially support kaupapa that are by rangatahi and for rangatahi. This ensures that our rangatahi hold the pen and maintain mana motuhake over the areas of development that they are passionate about.

What do the members receive?

The members are provided specialist mentoring and development opportunities directly from the trusts CEO. Each of the members will be assigned a budget to up-skill in the areas of governance, financial literacy, and public speaking. The members are also invited to attend any/all of the trusts development initiatives. They will also undergo a 12 month + leadership development programme to support their holistic development.
